Sitting On a Bench at Night

Beautiful, yet
simple.

As if the sky was designed
in a child's art class:

a piece of black construction paper
streaked with ribbons of glue,
glitter not "lightly sprinkled," rather,
the whole paper seems to glow
until flipped over,
the excess floating down
and sticking to the classroom carpet
like a layer of evening dew.

Melodious and
original.

Seeming to be composed
by a great musician:

the introduction featuring solely the wind-
a breeze drifting through the air
played adagio,
causing loose leaves to dance across the lawn.
The crickets join in,
almost unnoticeable at first
until they crescendo
with a steady rhythm.
The stringed instruments play in harmony
with the wind
until the grand finale
of silence
as the sun rises.

I have said this before, that I am not very good at poetry, but I attempt for my class. This assignment was to write a poem containing two distinct images.

I had to look at a musical terminology dictionary online for a lot of the words in the second part - I know nothing about music. There were some interesting words on there. For example, I wanted to use the word "ritardando." Apparently it means something about gradually getting slower, but I think it just sounds funny.
