Garth, Apples, and a Prince

Operator won't you put me on through
I gotta send my love down to Baton Rouge
Hurry up won't you put her on the line
I gotta talk to the girl just one more time

"Callin' Baton Rouge" is probably my favorite Garth Brooks song. Mostly because it's about a girl named Samantha :) Too bad I don't live in Louisiana...

Last night, a bunch of us played Apples to Apples, one of the best games EVER. Basically, there is a card in the middle with an adjective on it and in your hand are a bunch of nouns. Each person puts in one of their nouns that they think is best described by the adjective in the middle. Everyone takes turns being the judge and deciding which card wins. The success of this game is really dependent on the types of people playing and the types of cards on your hands. The best play last night: the adjective was lucky. Second place: the Challenger Explosion. The card that won: Anne Frank. So wrong, but so funny...

So I was reading a devotional for today and it was talking about how the story of Snow White translates to our Christian life: Satan is the wicked queen who was beautiful but became proud and lost it (Satan's fall from heaven) and became jealous of Snow White (us). Satan came to deceive us and destroy us (the poisoned apple), but Christ came to save us (the handsome prince).

It was asking questions at the end about how you felt about the different characters when you were a child and your reaction to Snow White's taking the apple. And thinking about it made me realize one of the reasons I never really liked this fairy tale. I felt like Snow White was so DUMB. I mean, seriously. A scary old lady with warts on her nose comes by your house randomly and offers you an apple. Really? In Beauty and the Beast, Belle had to deal with the Beast but that was because she loved her father enough to take his place. Cinderella's not being able to go to the ball was not her fault; her step sisters destroyed her chances. Even Sleeping Beauty had an excuse for touching the spindle: she was under spell. Snow White was naive.

But the devotional asked what would have happened if Snow White hadn't taken the bait. And my initial response was, "Good idea! Then she never would have been under the spell and basically died and life would have been good." But after thinking about it, I realized something - if she hadn't eaten the apple, there would have been no need for Prince Charming to come along and wake her up.

In the same way, I HATE it when I mess up. I feel stupid and hopeless. But it shows my need for a Savior. If I was perfect, then there would be no need for Christ in my life. So even though I hate weakness, it's encouraging to know that Christ is right there to take over and be my strength.

Wow, that is so insightful. I hadn't really thought about how stupid she was, and yet we do the exact same thing. We're idiots! And yet God uses us to shine His glory through!

And great song. I actually grew up on country music, since that's what my parents like. I sometimes listen to the "oldies" country station, but not the newer stuff. I like the stuff I grew up with.

may i just say that:
1. That's my favorite Garth Brooks song, too, because on his live album, he yells LOUISIANA really loud, so my sister and I always yell LOUISIANA really loud, even on the normal version, and everyone else just awkwardly stares. and it's really fun, samantha dear.

2.apples to apples=best game EVER!

3. the whole snow white-prince charming analogy just gave me chills.
chills.
wow. that is so good.
